    Good Health=Hope

    As I presided over the TMA Foundation’s presentation at the TMA Winter Conference, I was struck by a common thread in the work of our Champion of Health winners, who you can read about in this newsletter. The hundreds of Texans who benefit from these clinics not only receive treatment for life-threatening conditions, they receive hope…hope for better health and an improved quality of life.

    This thread of hope is woven into many of the programs that TMAF makes possible thanks to your support of the foundation. Whether you contribute financial support or volunteer to carry out a TMAF-funded program, please know that your support gives hope to the child, the family or the older individual who is reached by the initiatives you make possible.

  • TMAF Award Offers Hope and Healing

    TMAF’s highest recognition, its John P. McGovern Champion of Health Award (COH), recently honored two exceptional projects, each anchored by TMA members, that provide compassionate and no cost care to low-income and uninsured individuals.

    Heal the City Free Clinic, an urgent care facility in Amarillo, received a $5,000 award. The $2,500 award went to the Kind Clinic of Austin for its “Pill that Prevents HIV” program, an HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis program.

    “I am humbled to be recognized for the work that is happening at Heal the City!” said Dr. Keister, an internist who created the clinic in 2014. “I am thankful for this generous award and will use it to continue to provide better care for the uninsured people of our community. “

    Each year, the COH recognizes programs that address urgent threats to the public’s health and furthers TMAF’s mission to help physicians create a healthier future for all Texans.

    Donors Recognized for Commitment to a Healthier Texas

    Generous donors whose cumulative donations earned them TMAF Major Donor status in 2017 were recognized by their peers at the recent TMA Winter Conference in Austin.

    Fourteen new and 13 upgraded Major Donors were saluted for years of support that enables TMA to reach more Texans each year with its award-winning health improvement, science and quality of care initiatives. Seven Major Donor levels ranging from the entry level of $10,000 to the top level of $1,000,000 or more recognize the lasting impact made by these donors. Recognition includes a listing on donor walls on the 10th floor of the TMA building, which now features more than 200 TMAF philanthropic leaders.

  • Medical Students do the CPR Two-Step

    Texas 2 Step  

    If you need CPR, there are now 4,190 more persons trained to help you. That’s how many Texans learned how to save a life with two simple steps through the recent National Texas Two Step CPR event, supported in part by TMA with a grant from TMA Foundation.  This annual event, developed in 2016 by Texas medical students, teaches the benefits of compressions-only/hands only CPR. In 2018, the program expanded from Texas to six additional states, training a total of 7,892 persons at 60 sites.   • Physicians Inspire New Programs

    Texans who suffer from Parkinson’s and minors who are victims of sex-trafficking will be helped by new initiatives recently supported by TMA Foundation grants. These and other new initiatives are among the more than $572,000 in recently approved TMAF grants.

    Power for Parkinson's, in collaboration with the Travis County Medical Society, provides free group fitness, dance and social activities for persons with Parkinson's and their care partners. Developed by Nina Mosier, MD, the program aims to slow or even reverse the symptoms of Parkinson's and help prevent depression and isolation that often accompanies the disease.

    Lubbock County Medical Society is collaborating with local organizations to make Lubbock and West Texas a safe haven for children and a user-unfriendly town for buyers and sellers of children for sex trafficking.

    Also new is TMA’s HPV Social Media Campaign that in March targeted two communities to increase awareness of how the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination can prevent cancer. Collaboration with colleges and clinics resulted in more than 100 Texans receiving the vaccine.
