Sample CME Activity Development

This document provides a structured approach and checklist for fulfilling core accreditation criteria, complying with the Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education, and meeting related policy requirements for a CME activity.

Implementing the Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education

The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) has several resources to support implementation of the Standards.

CME in Support of Maintenance of Certification

All CME providers in the ACCME System, this includes state accredited providers, have the option to add value to their CME programs by offering accredited CME that counts for MOC.

Resources and Documents for Initial Accreditation, Reaccreditation, and Commendation

Initial applicants seeking to achieve Provisional Accreditation, a two-year term, and providers seeking Accreditation, a four-year term must comply with all the Core Accreditation Criteria and Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education. 

Accredited providers also have the option to seek Accreditation with Commendation, a six-year term, the highest accreditation status; and available only to providers seeking reaccreditation, not to initial applicants. Commendation

Accredited CME providers have the option to aim to achieve Accreditation with Commendation. Providers that earn this distinction are awarded a six-year accreditation term.
