Sinan
Ali Bana, a third-year medical student at Texas A&M Health Science Center College
of Medicine, has joined the Texas Medical Association Foundation (TMAF) Board
of Trustees. He begins his one-year term at TMA Fall Conference in September,
after being selected in May to serve.
TMAF,
the philanthropic arm of TMA, raises funds to support the public health,
quality of care, and science priority initiatives of the association and the Family
of Medicine. TMAF raises funds and connects medicine, business, and community
groups that carry out these programs at the local and state levels.
Mr.
Bana, a TMA member since 2015, is president of the TMA/American Medical
Association (AMA) Medical Student Section (MSS) chapter at Texas A&M and has
represented the TMA MSS on TMA’s Board of Councilors, the organization’s
ethical policymaking body. Mr. Bana served on AMA Committee on Economics and
Quality in Medicine, and is a member of the American College of Radiology, the
American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Brazos-Robertson County Medical
Society.
Mr.
Bana joins the TMAF board of TMA members, TMA Alliance members (TMA physicians
and spouses who work on TMA volunteer initiatives such as the outreach programs
to improve health), and community leaders. Each member serves a three-year term
(student members serve one-year terms) and may be reappointed to serve two
additional terms.
Some
of the better-known programs TMAF supports include TMA’s Hard Hats for Little Heads, Walk
With a Doc Texas, Diversity in Medicine Scholarship Program, and Ernest
and Sarah Butler Awards for Excellence in Science Teaching. The foundation also funds local health
initiatives through community grants.
TMA is the largest state
medical society in the nation, representing more than 50,000 physician and
medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county
medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to
improve the health of all Texans. TMA Foundation raises funds to support the
population health, quality of care and science priority initiatives of TMA and
the Family of Medicine.
