History of Medicine Exhibits

Stamping Out Disease
Infectious diseases kill 13 million people worldwide every year. Therefore, controlling disease is a global medical priority.

 Women In Medicine
In the early American colonies, women informally practiced medicine as healers, nurses, herbalists, and midwives. Because the colonies had no medical schools, even men practiced without a license, gaining experience and knowledge through apprenticeships until formal medical schools and hospitals arrived in America in the 1750s. From that point on, women began to slowly disappear from medical practice and midwifery because they were excluded from formal medical education.
