Here’s an alarming statistic for you: About 3 million U.S. high school students reported using e-cigarettes in 2018, a 78% increase from 2017, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

As a physician you understand the health risks associated with tobacco products, but how do you effectively talk to your young patients about those dangers?

Well, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is here to help with a free online course entitled “Escape the Vape: Help Stop the E-Cigarette Epidemic Among Adolescents.”

The course is designed to help you routinely screen adolescents for e-cigarette use and counsel them about the health risks and long-term consequences of vaping.

The short course provides an overview of usage data, current research, regulations, resources, and tips, including:

  • How e-cigarettes work,
  • Long-term negative effects of nicotine,
  • Nationwide educational programs,
  • An overview of Texas tobacco laws, and
  • Tips and best practices for screening for e-cigarette use.

The free course is part of HHSC’s online continuing education offerings.
