Maria Monge, MD, director of adolescent medicine at Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin and chair of the Texas Medical Association Committee on Child and Adolescent Health, participated in a state Parent Teacher Association (PTA) town hall event called Straight Talk – It’s a Matter of Life and Breath at the Texas Capitol on Tuesday.
The panel included John Zerwas, MD, The University of Texas System’s new executive vice chancellor for health affairs who served in the Texas House of Representatives from 2007 to 2019.
The panel discussed the vaping health epidemic; issues with implementation of a state law passed last year that raised the minimum age to use or purchase tobacco products – including vaping devices – to 21; and the need for support to help students quit. (Watch video of the event on the Texas PTA Facebook page.)
The February issue of Texas Medicine magazine takes a close look at vaping, its consequences for youth, and the need for tighter regulation.
