The Texas Medical Association Medical Student Section (TMA-MSS) UT Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine chapter dedicated themselves to advocacy and community outreach in 2020. Here is what we accomplished:
- Hosted two panel events with community physicians and residents focused on building a career centered in advocacy and health policy.
- Our Bexar County Medical Society liaison, Nichole Henkes, and her counterpart from the University of Incarnate Word School of Osteopathic Medicine, launched the Bexar County Medical Society Student Collaboration Committee, hosting speaker events and community service opportunities.
- Launched the Long School of Medicine chapter of the VotER/Healthy Democracy Campaign. This involved registering more than 200 voters across campus, distributing ID badge cards with voter registration information, and communicating registration information to students.
- Attended the American Medical Association Medical Student Advocacy and Region Conference to speak with the Offices of Senator Ted Cruz and Representatives Joaquin Castro, John Carter, and Chip Roy.
- Hosted several resolution writing workshops and worked with student interest groups to guide classmates through both the TMA and AMA resolution cycle.
- Submitted 16 resolutions to the TMA House of Delegates.
- Received a BeWise Immunize℠ grant and hosted two vaccine drives at our local student-run community clinics: Alpha Home and Pride Clinic.
- Received a TMA grant and hosted a hepatitis vaccination campaign at Pride Clinic.
- Hosted a campus-wide vaccine administration workshop.
- Collaborated with our Pediatrics Interest Group to conduct Head Start physicals and host a Halloween fundraiser, creating goody bags for kids at Universal Hospital.
- Received a sponsorship to host a Hard Hats for Little Heads event but were unable to host it due to COVID-19 precautions.
- Set up a unique Long School of Medicine Be The Match code for on-campus recruitment.
We have made great efforts to bettering the community and inspiring future health care leaders. We look forward to our work in 2021!
