The Texas Medical Association’s Physicians Benevolent Fund will be able to provide even more support to physicians who have fallen on hard times thanks to a $15,000 gift from TMA Insurance Trust (TMAIT).
The fund provides financial assistance to Texas physicians and their families who are struggling with poverty, sickness, disability, accident, or other circumstances.
The late May Owen, MD, a Fort Worth pathologist and TMA past president, established the benefit with a $2,500 donation to help colleagues in distress.
Today the Physicians Benevolent Fund has three programs to help Texas physicians:
- Benevolence – Since 1961, more than 775 physicians have received more than $3.9 million in financial assistance to meet basic living expenses during times of financial duress. A portion of the donations go to developing health and wellness CME.
- Wellness – This new fund provides financial assistance to licensed Texas physicians who cannot afford short-term treatment for wellness issues that could affect their ability to safely practice medicine.
- Disaster Relief – Since 2005, 138 practices and their 293 physicians have received more than $1.4 million to reestablish patient care in federally declared disaster Texas counties.
TMAIT’s gift is the first of three annual contributions it will make to the fund through 2023.
