Throughout the past year, our chapter, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC) Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, focused on helping our community of El Paso in the fight against COVID-19. Our recent highlights include:
- Partnered with El Paso County Medical Society to distribute 1.5 million pieces of personal protective equipment, valued at $4 million, to more than 100 clinics in the El Paso area in less than a year.
- Started a new telemedicine program at our chapter’s affiliated free medical clinic, RotaCare, to refill medications and perform wellness checks during the pandemic.
- Vaccinated 40+ people against the flu at the RotaCare free clinic and received a Vaccines Defend What Matters TMA Foundation grant to do another vaccine drive this year.
- Used grassroots advocacy to end exploitation of incarcerated people for labor during the pandemic.
- Became more involved in TMA leadership, with our first chapter student on the TMA-MSS Executive Council and a first-year student on the TMA-MSS Ad-Hoc Committee for resolution review.
- Wrote TMA resolutions to oppose criminalization of gender-affirming care, create public health protections for incarcerated people, and improve physician access to migrant detention facilities.
- Received recognition, as half of the 2021 TTUHSC El Paso Student Government Association awards for Student Excellence and Student Service were won by active TMA chapter members.
- Raised funds through Patagonia jacket sales to support student travel to conferences (post-pandemic).
Our chapter aims to continue and strengthen our efforts in 2021 to improve health care and return to a life of normalcy post-COVID-19 for the central and greater El Paso County areas!
