The TMA special interest sections stayed busy during the week of TexMed 2022 at the Hilton Americas-Houston, with the introduction of a new executive council, CME sessions on sensitive transgender care and implicit bias, and more.
Following elections that took place prior to the conference, the following members will lead the Women Physicians Section (WPS) for the 2022-23 term:
- Emily Briggs, MD, chair;
- Shanna Combs, MD, chair-elect;
- Sara Woodward Dyrstad, MD, secretary;
- Maria C. Monge, MD, TMA delegate;
- Deepa Varshney, MD, TMA alternate delegate;
- Lindsay Botsford, MD, American Medical Association-WPS associate; and
- Deborah Fuller, MD, AMA-WPS alternate associate.
The Women Physicians Section hosted a CME session on negotiation skills that focused on the unique challenges that women face. Many of the CME sessions from TexMed will soon be available in TMA’s Education Center.
In other special interest section events at TexMed:
- The LGBTQ Health Section business meeting included a legislative update and the section-sponsored CME session on culturally sensitive care for transgender patients.
- The International Medical Graduate Section sponsored CME regarding recognizing and interrupting implicit bias in the workplace.
- During the TexMed opening keynote session, the Medical Student Section honored Arlo F. Weltge, MD, with the C. Frank Webber, MD, Award, which honors a TMA member physician who has provided outstanding service to the section. The section also honored Katherine Russell with the Student of the Year Award.
- The Resident and Fellow Section took time to recognize Bradley C. Lega, MD, during the opening keynote session. Dr. Lega was presented with the J.T. “Lamar” McNew, MD, Award, which honors a TMA member physician who provided outstanding service to residents and fellows in Texas.
- The Young Physician Section introduced its Executive Council candidates. The last day to vote in the election is tomorrow, May 11, so be sure to check your email for your ballot.
In addition to holding their business meetings, sections members socialized at the All-Section Mixer on TexMed’s opening night, and hosted meet-ups in the Expo Hall to promote their section, meet prospective section members, and network between sessions. These informal gatherings will recur at future TMA conferences, so keep an eye out for the next round of gatherings in the fall.
