The Texas Medical Association Foundation (TMAF) has elected five members of the Family of Medicine as its new officers to lead the foundation’s board for the next two years. The philanthropic arm of the Texas Medical Association (TMA) elected the officers during TMA’s annual conference, TexMed, held this year in Fort Worth.
TMAF supports statewide and local initiatives that focus on disease prevention, healthier lifestyles, and increasing access to health care. Long-standing programs the foundation funds include the Hard Hats for Little Heads bicycle helmet giveaway program for Texas children; Walk with a Doc Texas, part of an international grassroots movement devoted to encouraging healthy physical activity and strengthening patient-physician relationships; TMA’s Vaccines Defend What Matters, a program to provide vaccinations and increase vaccine awareness; and programs to grow and support the physician workforce.
Carla F. Ortique, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Houston, was elected TMAF board president. Previously the TMAF Board of Trustees’ vice president, she has been a member of the board since 2017. She and her husband, Judge Morris Overstreet, have long supported the foundation and are TMAF Major Donors.
Dr. Ortique also has served in many TMA leadership roles. She chaired both the Committee on Maternal and Perinatal Health and the Subcommittee on Adolescent Reproductive Health. She also served on the Council on Science and Public Health, is a delegate to the TMA House of Delegates, and served on the Patient-Physician Advocacy Committee.
Dr. Ortique cares for patients at Women’s Specialists of Houston (Texas Children’s Hospital). She also served on the Texas Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Task Force, and on the boards of the TMF Health Quality Institute and its foundation. She is a member of the National Medical Association, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Harris County Medical Society.
She received her medical degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
Clifford K. Moy, MD, a Houston psychiatrist, was elected vice president of the foundation board. He is a former speaker of the TMA House of Delegates, the association’s policymaking body. He also has served on the TMA Council on Medical Education, Committee on Physician Distribution and Health Care Access, and Committee on Health Careers and is a TMAF Major Donor. Dr. Moy also is a past chair of the American Medical Association Council on Long Range Planning and Development.
He is behavioral health medical director at TMF Health Quality Institute. He served on the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award Board of Examiners, including as senior examiner.
He is board certified in general psychiatry and a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). He is a Distinguished Life Fellow of APA, and served on the organization’s Council on National Affairs and Committee on Abuse and Misuse of Psychiatry, and on the Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians. He is a member of the Harris County Medical Society.
Dr. Moy is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society.
He received his medical degree from the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, formerly the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, and completed his residency training with UT Southwestern at Parkland Hospital.
Kim M. Rice, MD, a Dallas nephrologist, was elected board secretary. She is medical director at Fresenius Kidney Care Village II Dialysis Center and attending transplant nephrologist at both Baylor University Medical Center and Baylor All Saints Medical Center. She is board certified in nephrology and internal medicine.
In addition to serving on the TMA Foundation board and Leadership Society, Dr. Rice is a member of the TMA Council on Health Promotion and was a delegate to the TMA House of Delegates.
Dr. Rice is a member of the Dallas County Medical Society, American Society of Nephrology, and American Society of Transplantation, and served on the Donor Education, Awareness, and Registry Council Program and Texas Organ, Tissue, and Eye Donor Council.
She received her medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine.
Amy Whited of Austin was elected treasurer. She is the principal of Whited Consulting Group and recently was regional director of state government relations and public affairs at UCB, Inc.
A member of the TMA Alliance volunteer advocacy group of physicians and spouses, she serves on the TMA Council on Health Promotion in addition to her TMA Foundation board service. She also is a member of the Travis County Medical Society Alliance and is a TMAF Major Donor.
Ms. Whited is a past board member of the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association’s Austin Chapter and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Central Texas, and has served as state regional council chair of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization.
She is married to TMA physician member Chad Whited, MD.
Sunshine Moore of Corpus Christi was elected executive committee member at large. She has been a supporter of the foundation for more than a decade.
A member and past president of the TMA Alliance, Ms. Moore has served in several alliance leadership roles. She also has served as alliance representative on the TMA Council on Member Experience, Council on Health Promotion, Council on Science and Public Health, Committee on Membership, and TMA Political Action Committee.
Ms. Moore also is active in her local Nueces County Medical Society Alliance, having served as president and several other leadership offices.
She also serves on the board of directors of the South Texas Lighthouse for the Blind.
She is married to TMA physician member Jacob Moore, MD.
TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 57,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
The TMA Foundation raises funds to support the population health, science, and quality-of-care priority initiatives of TMA and the Family of Medicine.
