Thanks to the Texas Medical Association’s 50-Year Club Scholarship Fund, Canice Dancel’s path through medical school extends beyond her academic goals. Her journey is also infused with a passion to “make a meaningful impact on the lives of women, families, and communities in my future practice.”
Ms. Dancel is one of three TMA Texas medical student members to receive a $1,000 scholarship from the fund in recognition of outstanding academic performance.
The 2023 50-Year Club Scholarship winners are:
Canice Dancel, a fourth-year medical student at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. "As a first-generation student and an immigrant, receiving this scholarship represents not only invaluable financial assistance but also a powerful affirmation of my achievements and community involvement in Lubbock and West Texas," Ms. Dancel said. "This generous award will reimburse the large costs of my residency applications, which I submitted to obstetrics-gynecology programs this past September."
Jonathan Nielsen, a fourth-year medical student at The University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine at Galveston. He intends to pursue a primary care specialty. "Growing up in rural southern Utah with my father and mother, both without college degrees, was often difficult," Mr. Nielsen said. The 50-Year Club Scholarship will allow him to pursue a medical education without compromising the well-being of his family.
Nneka Ede, a third-year medical student at The University of Texas at Austin Dell Medical School who is also pursuing her master’s in biomedical engineering at the Cockrell School of Engineering. “As the child of Nigerian immigrants, I have always been deeply inspired by my family's journey and their unwavering determination to provide me with opportunities for a better future," she said. With this scholarship, Ms. Ede can fully focus on her studies without the burden of financial worries. "Your generosity has alleviated a significant burden, allowing me to focus wholeheartedly on my education and future endeavors," Ms. Ede said.
Applications for the 2024 50-Year Club Scholarship will open in July. Three $1,000 scholarships are awarded annually.
The 50-Year Club Scholarship Fund is one of six scholarships TMA offers to qualified applicants. Contributions to the 50-Year Club Scholarship Fund are tax-deductible and can be made online at texmed.org/donate (member login required). To find out more, email Chris Johnson.
