As Match Day nears, so does the deadline to apply for a Texas Medical Association scholarship helping to ensure the physician workforce more closely mirrors the population it serves.
The Diversity in Medicine Scholarship is open to one student at each of Texas’ medical schools who will enter their first year in fall 2024 and who is a member of a minority underrepresented in Texas’ physician population. Applicants are evaluated for the $10,000 scholarship on academic achievement, commitment to community service, and desire to care for Texas’ increasingly diverse population.
Students have until May 31 to apply for the assistance, which is meant to help aspiring physicians at a time when medical education costs continue to rise and studies show diverse health care teams lead to better patient outcomes, increased access to care, and improved cultural competence.
TMA’s 2024 Diversity in Medicine Scholarship is funded by TMA Foundation with generous support from its Bayardo Trust and Patrick Y. Leung, MD, Endowment, as well as generous annual gifts from H-E-B, Baldemar Covarrubias, MD, TMA county medical societies, and gifts from physicians and their families.
