New TMA Podcast Spotlights Timely Health Care Issues
By Hannah Wisterman

The Texas Medical Association Council on Health Promotion (CHP) has launched a podcast series to highlight health care issues important to physicians and patients as well as the community outreach programs the council oversees.

The 5-minute, physician-led discussions of TMA Health Beat focus on issues like obesity, vaccinations, diabetes, substance abuse, literacy, and mental health and are meant to be a “quick but accurate installation of information to listeners,” said council chair Li-Yu Mitchell, MD.

“We want to give listeners good information and lead them to the necessary resources.”

The podcast aims to align episodes with pressing topics of the moment. For instance, the hot summer months prompted Houston emergency health physician Hilary Fairbrother, MD, chair of TMA's Committee on Emergency Medical Services and Trauma, to discuss heat-related illnesses and how to prevent them. Earlier this year, amid seasonal flares of allergy triggers, "TMA Health Beat" was joined by Spring allergist Louise Bethea, MD, also a member of the Council on Health Promotion.

TMA physicians also present topics that patients continue to face year-round, such as the often complex challenges older patients face, both physically and with nonmedical factors.

The podcast is in its earliest stages; TMA members are encouraged to provide feedback on episodes and offer suggestions for future topics they would like to see discussed.
