A strategic plan is just a plan unless it includes specific directions on how to operationalize and measure its success, says Texas Medical Association President Ray Callas, MD.
This fifth goal of the TMA Board of Trustees’ plan – sustaining operational excellence – does exactly that by underscoring the association’s focus on membership, physician engagement, and operational viability, all with an eye toward efficiency.
“We must ensure the association is nimble, creative, and resourceful to meet the needs of all Texas physicians in all practice settings,” Dr. Callas said.
This month’s Texas Medicine takes a look at TMA’s strategies to maintain a dynamic association, which include:
- Continuing to seek innovative ways to create more engagement and efficiency in the association’s governance structure;
- Identifying investments to streamline and improve operations while maintaining the technology advancements already in use; and
- Growing the association’s membership with robust county medical societies and dedicated members who support TMA’s mission.
TMA already is achieving success with these strategies.
The association recently held a successful annual House of Delegates meeting in person and virtually, attracting at least 400 physician members. Throughout the year, TMA also saw a 90% attendance rate at TMA council and committee meetings. All this was accomplished while developing innovative ways to recruit new active physician members and retain current members.
“The needs of physicians are challenging, and TMA must work hard to ensure we are meeting those needs. That’s why we are making a concerted effort to travel the state to learn directly from member and nonmember physicians what they need to thrive and survive in these changing times,” Dr. Callas said.
TMA also:
• Conducted a technology audit with the goal of decreasing redundancy in software used by staff; and
• Continues to work to ensure TMA building renovations are completed by Oct. 30.
