TMA Members Win Key AMA Seats
By Pam Udall

In addition to influencing a dozen American Medical Association policies at its annual meeting in June, Texas Medical Association members also won key seats in AMA leadership positions.

Fort Worth pediatrician Melissa Garretson, MD, was elected to the AMA Board of Trustees after running for the seat against four other physicians with strong support from TMA and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The election of Dr. Garretson will add a Texan to the AMA Board of Trustees after a two-year hiatus and the expired term of Houston plastic surgeon Russ Kridel, MD.

Ezequiel “Zeke” Silva III, MD, a diagnostic and interventional radiologist from San Antonio and chair of TMA’s Council on Legislation, was elected to the AMA Council on Medical Service. Dr. Silva also chairs AMA’s RVS Update Committee a volunteer group of 31 physicians who advise Medicare on how to value a physician’s work.

With the election of Dr. Silva, Texas will have a representative on six of seven AMA councils among other representation, including:

  • Michelle Berger, MD and G. Sealy Massingill, MD – Council on Long Range Planning & Development, with Dr. Berger as chair
  • John T. Carlo, MD – Council on Science & Public Health
  • Cynthia A. Jumper, MD – Council on Medical Education
  • Gary W. Floyd, MD – Council on Legislation
  • Larry E. Reaves, MD – Council on Ethical & Judicial Affairs
  • Victoria Gordon, DO – AMPAC
