● WHAT: Physicians, other health care stakeholders, and government policymakers are gathering for a one-day conference to discuss the unique health care challenges Texans along the Texas-Mexico border face.
Many people have diabetes, obesity, and other chronic health conditions and they often lack health insurance – 42% of adults have no health coverage. The large influx of migrants and asylum-seekers adds more pressure on already scarce resources, even if they are in the area only for a short term. In addition, the U.S.-Mexico border region faces a physician and health care provider shortage.
The Texas Medical Association (TMA) Border Health Caucus will host its 19th annual conference with area stakeholders to discuss these challenges and others and to seek solutions. This year’s Border Health Conference will focus on strengthening border health care.
● WHEN: Friday, Aug. 23, 8:30 am-noon
● WHERE: La Posada Hotel, 1000 Zaragoza St., Laredo
● WHO: G. Ray Callas, MD, president, Texas Medical Association; Victor Gonzalez, MD, chair, Border Health Caucus; Alexander Eastman, MD, chief medical officer, Department of Homeland Security; keynote speaker Sen. Judith Zaffirini (D-Laredo); special guest U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas); and other officials will discuss the health care issues facing the Texas-Mexico border. Check the agenda for more conference details.
TMA’s Swathi Narayanan can arrange physician leader interviews on site.
TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 57,000 physician and medical student members. It is in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
