Upon the conclusion of his one-year Texas Medical Association (TMA) presidency in May 2025, Beaumont anesthesiologist G. Ray Callas, MD, continues serving as an ex-officio member of the TMA Board of Trustees.

His presidency was marked by traveling the state, meeting with physicians, county medical societies, state leaders, medical schools, and stakeholders, spreading the message of TMA priorities – including on TMA’s inaugural Listening Tour.

“It’s an emotional high that I live on every day,” he said about his TMA presidency. “I try to be anywhere and everywhere I can be because I think it’s important that as president of the Texas Medical Association you’re out there talking about what we’re doing as an organization.”

No matter where Dr. Callas visited, he found the issues most important to him – such as preserving physician-led health care and lobbying for payment sufficient for keeping practices viable – also resonated with the diverse group of physicians he met.

“Whenever you go out and talk about what TMA offers, you even blow TMA members’ minds, because they don’t realize what all we provide to people, like CME, the Knowledge Center, and membership development,” said Dr. Callas.

In just his first six months as TMA president, he attended close to 120 in-person and online meetings on behalf of the association. He also took numerous Zoom calls, meetings with news reporters, and discussions with TMA staff members.

Setting TMA up for success at the Capitol during this year’s legislative session was his primary focus, he said.

“I’ve been thinking about [the 2025 session] since I got elected,” the Beaumont anesthesiologist said, emphasizing the need to place TMA priorities in front of legislators well before the session convened on Jan. 14, 2025.

Dr. Callas testified at several Texas House and Senate committee hearings both prior to and during the session.

The immediate past president will continue to advocate for medicine and for the organization in his position on the TMA board and as a member of the Texas Delegation to the American Medical Association.

Dr. Callas has held several other leadership roles at TMA, including chair of the association’s Council on Legislation and Council on Constitution and Bylaws. He also serves on the TEXPAC Board of Directors and TMA’s political action committee’s Candidate Evaluation Committee. Dr. Callas also has been a delegate to the TMA House of Delegates policymaking body since 2004.

A long-time member of the Jefferson County Medical Society, Dr. Callas served as president and is a member of its board. He also chaired the Texas Medical Liability Trust Board of Directors and is a past president of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists.

The board-certified anesthesiologist has practiced medicine with Anesthesia Associates (which Dr. Callas describes as the oldest medical practice in the state) since 2004. He is president of the practice’s board of directors. He serves in leadership roles at multiple hospitals and surgical center facilities in Jefferson County and Beaumont.
