Following Texas Medical Association advocacy that secured an initial extension, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has again extended the period during which physicians can seek revalidation through the Texas Medicaid & Health Partnership (TMHP), this time to Nov. 30.
Extending the due date period that initially ended on May 31 means any Texas physician seeking to care for Medicaid patients who are due for revalidation through Nov. 30 will receive an additional 180 calendar days to complete the process in TMHP’s Provider Enrollment and Management System (PEMS) – though physicians are encouraged to take action as soon as possible.
“HHSC is extending the deadline to ensure providers have sufficient time to complete the process and prevent disenrollment,” an HHSC spokesperson said. “Even with the extension, HHSC strongly recommends providers begin the revalidation process prior to their original deadline.”
HHSC said the extension will be reflected in the revalidation due dates column found on the provider information page in PEMS. Each physician granted an extension will also receive email notification confirming the new revalidation due date.
“Please note, a provider’s revalidation is not complete until their revalidation request is in the ‘closed-enrolled’ status,” the HHSC spokesperson cautioned. “Submitting the revalidation request is the first step of the process. The revalidation request must then go through the review process and be approved.”
Additionally, physicians disenrolled between Nov. 1, 2023, and Dec. 12, 2024, who revalidate by this coming Nov. 30, may have their enrollment period backdated up to 365 days.
Late last year, TMA joined four other Texas health care organizations to send a letter critiquing Medicaid credentialing and revalidation through PEMS, acknowledging HHSC efforts to assist physicians with the system while advocating for improvements.
The news comes after a recently announced HHSC initiative, which would allow physicians to concurrently enroll in Texas Medicaid and submit managed care organization credentialing information, was placed on hold so staff could integrate additional needed changes.
Texas Medicine Today will provide an update once HHSC activates the additional PEMS functionality.
