The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) seeks physicians to join the state’s Medical Disclosure Panel, with applications due Friday, March 13.

The 13-member body determines which risks and hazards related to medical care and surgical procedures physicians or nonphysician practitioners must disclose to their patients or people authorized to consent for their patients.

Appointees of the panel are a mix of physicians, attorneys, and members representing the public (at least one with background in health literacy). After a review of applications, HHSC’s commissioner will appoint four physicians with licenses to practice medicine in Texas to serve a term expiring either Aug. 31, 2031, or Aug. 31, 2032, depending upon the current expiration date of the position.

The panel was established to promote clarity, consistency, and fairness in the informed consent process between physicians and patients. Its role is limited to identifying disclosure requirements related to informed consent in medical liability cases.

According to HHSC, appointed members must regularly take part in panel meetings and may also have to take part in subcommittee meetings or other related activities. Panel meetings are held about once every three months in Austin or at the call of the presiding officer. Members must travel to Austin for these meetings unless HHSC allows members to participate in other ways (such as virtually).

Review HHSC’s application letter to see if you qualify. To apply, visit the application portal on the commission’s website.
