Underserved, uninsured, and Latino patients across Texas will benefit from three programs focusing on vaccinations and vaccine education awarded funds in the first round of the Texas Medical Association’s 2022 Vaccines Defend What Matters grant program.
The TMA Foundation offers grants of up to $3,500 to fund vaccination activities, education, and outreach events.
The most recent grantees are:
- UT Southwestern Medical School TMA Medical Student Chapter and Brother Bill’s Helping Hand: This partnership between the medical student chapter and a local nonprofit aims to combat low immunization rates in predominantly uninsured and elderly Latino communities of west Dallas by providing vaccine education and administering vaccines through a student-run free clinic.
- Spring Branch Community Health Center, for annual back-to-school vaccination drives: Each year, the center – which serves underserved and uninsured communities in Spring Branch and west Houston – coordinates free, neighborhood-wide vaccination drives. Last year, the center provided more than 1,350 vaccines to 435 children who had health coverage through Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program, or were uninsured.
- University of North Texas Health Science Foundation, for community vaccine clinics: The clinics will vaccinate underserved and uninsured children, adolescents, and adults in Tarrant County, and provide education through distributing pamphlets on the flu.
Applications for the next round of Vaccines Defend What Matters grants are open until June 1. County medical societies, TMA Alliance chapters, medical student chapters, and TMA member-physician practices and clinics can apply.
TMA’s Vaccines Defend What Matters is funded in 2022 by the TMA Foundation thanks to major support from H-E-B, TMF Health Quality Institute, Permian Basin Youth Chavarim and gifts from physicians and their families.
