The COVID-19 pandemic has drained physicians’ emotional resources. While there seems to be light at the end of this dark tunnel, the scars remain and will continue to negatively impact physician wellness.
If you find yourself stretched beyond your limits or at a breaking point, the Texas Medical Association can help. TMA’s PBF Wellness Fund is here to relieve financial barriers to treatment for mental health conditions, substance-use disorders, or other impairments. Qualified physicians can receive financial support for treatment or to cover their family’s living expenses while undergoing treatment.
“The fund is meant to allow physicians the dignity of getting back on their feet,” said a physician who received support through the PBF Wellness Fund. “I am really grateful the fund was there when I needed it.”
Added Nancy Thorne Foster, MD, chair of TMA’s Physicians Benevolent Fund (PBF) Committee: “When a physician’s well-being is at stake, TMA is here to provide hope and healing. This fund might be the motivation a friend or colleague needs to take the step to seek help.”
If you need assistance or know of a physician or physician’s family in need, email Chris Johnson, PBF director, or call her at (512) 370-1602. Applicants must complete a confidential application. TMA strives to protect the anonymity of fund recipients.
Contributions from physicians and their spouses support the fund. If you want to help, contribute via secure, online donation, or send a check to PBF Wellness Fund, Attn: TMA Finance Department, 401 W. 15th St., Austin, TX 78701-1680. PBF is a 501(c)(3) organization so charitable contributions are tax-deductible to the full extent permitted by federal law.
