As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) investigates a case of polio in New York state, the agency is encouraging physicians and health care professionals to ensure their patients are up to date on their polio vaccinations.
“Healthcare providers should consider polio in the differential diagnosis of patients with sudden onset of limb weakness, especially in unvaccinated individuals and those with recent international travel to places where poliovirus is circulating,” CDC said.
The agency will hold a Clinician Outreach and Communication Activity (COCA) via phone and webinar on Thursday, Sept. 1, from 1 to 2pm CT to discuss:
- Polio’s history in the U.S. and the New York outbreak;
- How to report suspected cases; and
- Vaccination recommendations.
The call will be led by a panel of physician public health experts. Details and registration are on the CDC website.
CDC has designated the COCA activity for a maximum of 1 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
