The TMA Board of Trustees elected Cynthia Jumper, MD, to the office of vice chair in 2024.
“After 38 years of dedicated TMA membership and five on the board, I am thrilled to embark on a new chapter as vice chair,” Dr. Jumper said. “It's an honor to continue serving and contributing to the growth and success of our organization in this capacity.”
When house members re-elected her to the TMA Board of Trustees in 2022, she was honored to continue working at the board level on initiatives like preserving the patient-physician relationship.
“My goals are to carry out the priorities set by the House of Delegates and to truly provide a voice for the members of TMA,” she said at the time. In addition to protecting patients’ access to their physicians without interference, she said recent priorities have included “providing resources needed to maintain a medical practice during COVID-19 and forcing an even playing field on out-of-network billing.”
Having served on the TMA board since 2019, Dr. Jumper said she is amazed by its diversity. “We have many different values and viewpoints, yet we all come together for Texas physicians and patients.”
Dr. Jumper believes contributing to organized medicine is important because physicians need to have their voices heard. “My hope is that Texas physicians continue to stay involved in advocacy, that they continue to donate hundreds of hours to further our profession, and that they never lose sight of what is best for patients,” she said.
The internist and pulmonologist with more than three decades of experience joined TMA while she was a medical student. Over the years, she has chaired the TMA Council on Medical Education, and served on TMA’s Councils on Legislation and Socioeconomics. She is active in TEXPAC, TMA’s political action committee, and was a member of TMA’s Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Task Force.
Active at the national level, Dr. Jumper serves as a Texas delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA) and on the AMA Council on Medical Education.
And as a community caregiver and health care educator in Lubbock, Dr. Jumper supervises medical students who train at local medical clinics serving homeless patients and who participate in global health care electives. She donates both time and money to many local organizations and is proud of her hometown of Lubbock “and all that it has to offer.”
