As part of its longtime efforts to assist underserved communities throughout Texas, the Texas Medical Association Foundation (TMAF) is accepting nominations for the 2024 John P. McGovern, MD, Champion of Health Award nominations until Feb. 15.
Established in 1995 and named after Houston allergist John McGovern, MD, the award focuses on “exceptional projects” that address urgent threats to the public's health; address TMA’s science and public health priorities; and further TMAF's mission to help physicians create a healthier future for all Texans.
Dr. McGovern was a longtime donor to TMAF and was frequently awarded for philanthropic actions during his affiliation with TMA. Former U.S. President Ronald Reagan awarded him with the Private Sector Initiative Commendation.
The first place winner will receive a $7,500 grant; second place winners will receive a $3,000 grant.
In 2023, Jubilee Park Community Clinic won the top award for offering free medical and dental care in Southeast Dallas.
“It is the mission of a lifetime to be part of a project like Jubilee Park Community Clinic and to walk with our resilient community to achieve health equity for Southeast Dallas,” Marissa Castro Mikoy, the clinic’s president and chief executive officer, said at the time.
Nominated programs will have until Feb. 29 to complete their entries. Winners will be announced at the TMAF Gala on May 3 during TMA’s 2024 TexMed conference in Dallas.
