Prospective Private Practice Committee Accepting Nominations

The Texas Medical Association Board of Trustees has recommended the House of Delegates vote to form a standing committee of the board focusing on the unique and dire needs of private practice physicians.

President-Elect Ray Callas, MD, has tapped Michelle Berger, MD, an Austin ophthalmologist, and Amy Townsend, MD, a family physician from Bridge City, as the respective chair and vice chair of the impending committee. If approved by the house at TexMed 2024 in May, 13 additional committee members will immediately be appointed.

“I look forward to working together to strengthen the independent practice of medicine in Texas,” Dr. Callas said.

Please log in to the TMA website to submit a nomination for this committee no later than Tuesday, April 23. Duties and qualifications are as follows:

  • The committee will meet three times annually; additional virtual meetings may be called by the chair.
  • Prospective appointees must meet the definition developed by the Ad Hoc Committee on Independent Physician Practice to serve on the standing committee: “An independent physician practice comprises one or more physicians with decision-making authority and responsibility for the viability of the medical practice in which they own controlling interest.”

To learn more about the committee’s potential work, or to share your stories about starting or maintaining your private practice in Texas, attend the Independent Practice Physicians Forum during TexMed 2024 at the Dallas Omni Hotel on Friday, May 3, from 11 am-noon on Level 3 in the Expo Hall.
