Four Texas medical students, motivated by their desire to help those in need, have been chosen to receive a $1,500 scholarship from the Lone Star Caucus (LSC). The LSC, comprised of smaller, nonmetro county medical societies, awards scholarships annually to medical students who show an interest in working in medically underserved areas.
“These scholarships for students from the Lone Star Caucus counties ensure continued access to medical care for underserved Texans,” said LSC Scholarship and Awards Chair Nefertiti duPont, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Shenandoah. “The LSC wants to encourage future physicians to return home and practice locally.”
Meet the recipients:
- Jasmine Liu-Zarzuela. A fourth-year medical student at the UTMB John Sealy School of Medicine, she will complete a general psychiatry residency and child and adolescent psychiatry fellowship at UT Southwestern Medical School. Jasmine’s goal is to address the critical needs of children’s mental health in rural Texas.
- Sara Mansour. A fourth-year medical student at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine, she plans to make a tangible impact in health care and specialize in anesthesiology.
- Eshani Kishore. A third-year medical student at the Foster School of Medicine interested in internal medicine, she plans to serve and advocate for underserved communities in rural West Texas.
- Alan Josue Guzman. A third-year medical student at the Foster School of Medicine, he is focused on addressing medical disparities and enhancing hospital experiences and health outcomes for patients, especially among Spanish-speaking populations along the Rio Grande.
The LSC funds the scholarships, while the TMA Office of Trust Fund Administration manages those funds.
