Recognizing the fast-moving shift to value-based care and the ensuing need for physician guidance, the Texas Medical Association House of Delegates approved a new standing Committee on Alternative Payment Models (APMs) and is now accepting nominations.
The committee, which will report to TMA’s Council on Socioeconomics, was set in motion to:
- Research, develop, and recommend association policy on APMs;
- Identify and develop TMA regulatory, legislative, and budget recommendations relating to alternative payment and care delivery models;
- Monitor and engage in, as appropriate, implementation of state and federal regulatory and legislative initiatives related to these efforts; and
- Develop and promote continuing medical education programs and resources related to APMs.
TMA leaders are in the process of appointing participants to the nine-member body with regional representation of varying practice sizes, types, and specialties. While a majority of committee members should have APM experience, “there is a seat at the table for young leaders, TMA influencers, and those with a passion for the topic though they may not have actual value-based care experience,” TMA President Ray Callas, MD, said.
In particular, the committee seeks representation from physicians participating in:
- Direct primary care;
- A certified primary care medical home;
- An integrated hospital system that has value-based contracts;
- A pay-for-performance program, i.e. getting paid to meet specific quality measures with a commercial or Medicare Advantage plan;
- An academic setting involved in value-based care.
A diversity of specialties and geographies also are welcome. In particular, the committee is looking for representation from orthopedics, cardiology, and psychiatry, and from San Antonio, the Rio Grande Valley, and West Texas.
