Another batch of medical students will be encouraged to return to their hometowns to practice medicine thanks to a $1.1 million gift the Texas Medical Association’s Special Funds Foundation recently received – its largest individual donation – to establish a new medical student scholarship for Tarrant, Johnson, and Parker County students.
The scholarship will be available to medical students who currently live in or have previously resided in Tarrant, Johnson, or Parker County and are attending a medical school in Texas. Students are eligible for $10,000 each year of medical school, potentially amounting to $40,000 after four years.
“We all know how costly medical school is. This donation was given to help future physicians navigate that cost and to encourage them to return to the area once they have completed their training to provide care to members of those counties,” said Fort Worth endocrinologist Kenneth Mair, MD, whose recently dissolved North Texas Specialty Physicians (NTSP) group made the donation.
NTSP’s gift is just one of many philanthropy efforts made over its existence. Previously, the group donated funds to two local colleges, a food bank, and to the construction of a new building for Mission Arlington, an outreach program that serves the city of Arlington and beyond.
“Every dollar a student receives in scholarships is a reduction of their educational debt. I’m truly grateful to this donor organization for their generosity toward the future of medicine. They are a great group of physicians just wanting to give back,” said Gail Schatte, TMA’s associate vice president for trust fund administration.
Keep an eye out for application information coming soon to TMA’s educational loans and scholarships webpage.
