Tomorrow (Jan. 10) is your last chance to let the Texas Medical Association know which health and medical news stories from 2018 are worthy of TMA’s Anson Jones, MD, Awards.
Your experiences in and out of your office give you a keen eye and ear for news stories that hit the mark and that accurately report medical news or trends in medicine and health care.
Sidney C. Roberts, MD, (at right) of Lufkin, nominated two East Texas journalists who reported on the hospital closure in Crockett. The winning print and TV coverage “brought attention to a health care issue that otherwise would have been ignored,” Dr. Roberts said.
“Local reporters often are the unsung heroes of health care journalism,” said Dr. Roberts, who won the Anson Jones’ physician category award in 2017. “I was honored to both nominate and present the awards to two who reported so well on a rural hospital closure that impacted an entire region’s health care.”
The Anson Jones awards, which recognize excellence in health reporting, have categories for print, radio, television, and online news reports published or broadcast in Texas during 2018.
To nominate journalists, email ansonjones[at]texmed[dot]org. All TMA needs is the reporter’s name, name of story (if available), date of broadcast/publication, and the media outlet. Please try to include a web URL.
And if you actively provide news to your local media outlets, like Dr. Roberts, consider entering yourself in the Physician Excellence in Reporting category. The category is open to physician and medical students. TMA will accept contest entries until noon on Thursday, Jan. 10. That’s tomorrow, so enter now.
Visit the Anson Jones webpage for complete contest details. If you have questions, call Tammy Wishard, TMA outreach coordinator, at (800) 880-1300, ext. 1470, or (512) 370-1470, or email ansonjones[at]texmed[dot]org.
