Frederick L. Merian, MD, earned his BA in Zoology from The University of Texas at Austin in 1963 and received his medical degree from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1967. Dr. Merian served his internship at Wright Patterson Air Force Base Hospital where he became a member of the School of Aerospace Medicine Preventive Medicine Department in 1968. As an Air Force officer, Dr. Merian became a dispensary flight surgeon and a dispensary commander. He received an Air Force Commendation Medal in 1971, shortly before he left the military to go into private family practice in Yoakum, Texas. Dr. Merian stayed in private practice until 1991, when he became a partner in the American Regional Health Center in Victoria, Texas. He has served as the center's president and managing partner since 1997.

Dr. Merian has a rich history of participation in organized medicine. He was elected chair of the Texas Medical Association Board of Trustees in May 2000, after serving as vice chair the previous year. A member of TMA since 1972, Dr. Merian has served as both member and chair of the TMA Council on Socioeconomics and the Committee on Rural Health. Dr. Merian also was a member of the Ad Hoc Committee on Access to Health Care and chaired its Subcommittee on Medicaid. From 1994 to 2000, he chaired the Advisory Committee for TMA Physician Services, TMA's practice management services entity.

Dr. Merian is secretary of the board of HealthFirst IPA, and has served as chair of HealthFirst's Utilization Management/Quality Assurance Committee since 1995. On the county level, Dr. Merian was a member of the DeWitt-Lavaca County Medical Society from 1972 to 1992 and was elected president in 1982. He has been a member of the Victoria-Jackson-Goliad County Medical Society since 1992. 

Dr. Merian's interest in organized medicine does not confine itself to Texas. He has been a delegate to the TMA House of Delegates since 1983. He was elected delegate to the American Medical Association in 1998, having served as an alternative delegate since 1993. He also has been a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians since 1978.

Dr. Merian lives and works in Victoria, where he resides with his wife of 31 years, Merry. They have three children.
