Each year, members of the Texas Medical Association’s Council on Health Promotion and former journalists have the tough job of selecting the best of the best in health reporting. Their picks earn TMA’s annual Anson Jones, MD, Awards.
Now it’s time for you and the Family of Medicine to help: The 2022 Anson Jones awards entry process is underway. TMA invites physicians to nominate stories that stood out in their local media.
“We want to recognize reporters who did an outstanding job reporting on COVID-19 and other health issues this year,” said Alison Haddock, MD, of Houston, chair of TMA’s Council on Health Promotion. “We particularly want to hear about great stories that included a local angle and that featured our TMA members as experts.”
Stories on COVID-19 dominated this year’s Anson Jones selections, with winning stories about COVID long-haulers, challenges to rural hospitals, a comparison to the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, and more. Winning journalists hailed from across the Lone Star State, from Odessa to the Rio Grande Valley to Victoria.
Updated categories for the 2022 Anson Jones contest recognize Texas journalists in print/online, television, and radio news outlets.
If you recall a standout story worthy of recognition, please submit your nominations by Dec. 31 for judging in early 2022. Include the reporter’s name, date of broadcast/publication, media outlet, story name, and story URL (link) if you have it. TMA will send a postcard to the reporter with a note alerting him or her of your nomination. Journalists themselves can self-submit entries until Jan. 10, 2022.
