Addressing the opioid crisis has been a long-standing priority for the Texas Medical Association, and the topic garnered the kudos of the association’s community outreach program connecting medicine to the media.
The Anson Jones, MD, Awards recognize excellence in lay medical reporting, and have been given since 1957. The awards span the state of Texas in 10 categories.
TMA awarded this year’s first place award in the in-depth TV news category to KVUE-TV Austin’s Jenni Lee, a reporter, and Dennis Thomas, a photojournalist for their coverage of teenage overdose deaths through the story of an adolescent survivor. Travis County Medical Society President Jonathan MacClements, MD, presented the commendation.
TMA’s Council on Health Promotion oversees the awards as a way to connect local journalists with organized medicine. By reaching out to community reporters, TMA aims to include physicians’ voices in coverage of pressing issues around the state.
