TMA Honors Dallas Physician for Work With Resident Physicians

May 25, 2023

Dallas nephrologist Tapan J. Patel, MD, has received the 2023 J.T. “Lamar” McNew, MD, Award for his service to medical residents (physicians in training). The Texas Medical Association (TMA) Resident and Fellow Section recognized Dr. Patel during TexMed, TMA’s annual conference, in Fort Worth.

The award celebrates a TMA physician who has provided outstanding mentoring and service to residents and fellows – medical school graduates completing specialty training prior to practicing medicine on their own.

“I am honored to receive this award from TMA,” said Dr. Patel. “This award will motivate me to keep working harder towards improving graduate and undergraduate medical education.”

Dr. Patel is a vice president at Dallas Nephrology Associates and has been practicing nephrology for 12 years. He is director of the internal medicine residency program and chief of the nephrology division at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.

He has been a TMA member for 16 years and is also a member of other professional organizations including the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Nephrology, the National Kidney Foundation, and the Dallas County Medical Society.

Subhan Tabba, MD, a resident at Texas Health Presbyterian Dallas, nominated Dr. Patel for the award.

“He has tirelessly recruited world-renowned academic faculty, created a wellness program for residents, encouraged research – and most of all, supported residents in all of their academic and personal endeavors,” Dr. Tabba said.

Dr. Patel earned his medical degree from the Pramukhswami Medical College in India. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Methodist Hospital of Dallas and fellowship in nephrology from Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas.

The award is named for Dr. McNew, a retired Bryan physician who served in the Brazos Valley region for many years, and who was a primary provider of obstetrical services to area women covered by Medicaid. Dr. McNew also taught at the Texas A&M Health Science Center for 20 years.

TMA is the largest state medical society in the nation, representing more than 57,000 physician and medical student members. It is located in Austin and has 110 component county medical societies around the state. TMA’s key objective since 1853 is to improve the health of all Texans.
