The Texas Medical Association House of Delegates policymaking body elected Little Elm internist John G. Flores, MD, as its speaker in May 2025. The office of the speaker is an ex-officio member of the TMA Board of Trustees. Dr. Flores values the important role of physician advocacy in preserving the patient-physician relationship.
“We have seen a steady increase in legislative actions directly affecting us as physicians,” said Dr. Flores. “We must continue to be vigilant and prepared to educate our lawmakers on how their actions impact the health and welfare of our patients and practices.”
In shifting to the top gavel position, Dr. Flores concluded four years of service as vice speaker of the house. In his tenure as a TMA member, he also has chaired TMA’s Council on Socioeconomics and Council on Health Service Organizations.
The TMA house also reelected Dr. Flores to the Texas Delegation to the American Medical Association – of which he is one of two vice chairs – during TexMed 2025. He also is vice chair of the AMA Organized Medical Staff Section’s Governing Council, and he chaired the AMA Election Committee. Dr. Flores is a former president of the Denton County Medical Society and co-chair of the Lone Star Caucus.
Throughout his tenure as vice speaker, Dr. Flores worked with Speaker Brad Holland, MD, to adjust the house’s procedures when the COVID-19 pandemic shifted the normally in-person meetings to virtual events, then back again to meeting room gatherings. Among the innovations they adopted was inviting members to submit testimonial comments about resolutions online, while floor policy debates continue to occur in person.
Dr. Flores has always sought to ensure the House of Delegates meeting runs smoothly and efficiently. “We have had many items of business to tackle and worked to provide members an open and welcoming meeting where everyone can have their voice heard,” he said.
