Deadline Extended for Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee Positions

Doctors Meeting 600

The application deadline has been extended to Feb. 24 for membership on the Maternal Mortality and Morbidity Review Committee (MMMRC), according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).

DSHS is seeking applicants for the current vacant positions:

  • Physician specializing in critical care;
  • Epidemiologist, biostatistician, or researcher of pregnancy-related deaths; and
  • Physician specializing in oncology.

DSHS appoints members to MMMRC to complete unexpired terms. Membership requires a strong voluntary commitment, and members must participate in subcommittee meetings, projects, and presentations. Meetings are held in Austin at least four times per year or at DSHS’ discretion.

The committee uses standard methods to review pregnancy-associated death causes to determine cause of death and if the death is related to pregnancy. Using that information, the MMMRC makes recommendations to the Texas Legislature to help reduce the number of pregnancy-related deaths and complications in the state.

Several TMA members also participate in MMMRC, reflecting TMA and MMMRC’s ongoing relationship around the shared goal of improving maternal health outcomes.
